The most important thing to do before looking for a motion design job (or video editor / filmmaker job) is getting your portfolio sorted. Make sure you have your up-to-date showreel right at the top of your website so companies don’t have to look for it.
Best thing to do is get yourself a domain name and buy a wordpress portfolio theme. Now all you need to do is add your best work to it and you’re half way there! If you have a vimeo page that’s alright, but having a portfolio website is much more useful as it makes you look more professional and you can also use it to promote yourself online – don’t forget to add a contact page so potential clients can contact you!
Now that the portfolio is all set up, you need a decent cover letter and a nice, clean CV. This is the second most important thing in our field, and I can’t stress enough how many times when looking for a new mograph designer we had people apply without a CV or a cover letter – that makes you look lazy and unprofessional, so make sure you got both of those ready to go. Ask someone to read it through to give you tips / point out spelling mistakes, etc.
To sum up – Portfolio + Showreel + Cover Letter + CV = more Chances on landing an interview!
